Reading and Phonics

Research shows that when phonics is taught in a structured way – starting with the easiest sounds and progressing through to the most complex – it is the most effective way of teaching young children to read. When children arrive at Patcham Junior School in year 3, many children still require good phonics teaching to be able to tackle new words and go on to read any kind of text fluently and confidently, and to read for enjoyment.

Reading is a vital part of the junior curriculum and should be an enjoyable experience for children. We encourage children to develop a positive attitude towards literature of all kinds and believe that parents play a vital role in this process. Time is allocated each day for guided and independent reading in the classrooms. Each class has a selection of fiction books, topic collections and reference books for research. We are also developing our school library, which we use, along with Patcham Community Library, which is located next door to the school.

DEAR, or Drop Everything And Read is an approach to reading that we share with Patcham High School. On a Friday afternoon everyone in the whole school stops what they are doing and reads. We use Accelerated Reader to track children’s reading skills and help us ensure every child is reading a book at just the right level.

Library Refurbishment September 2024

We are very excited to share with you that our school library is in the process of being refurbished thanks to the amazing fundraising by The Friends of Patcham Junior School. We are really keen to get all of our community involved in restocking our library with new and diverse books to the children to enjoy.

Therefore, we have created a PJS new library wish list through LoveReading4Kids. This is a fantastic way for you to donate a book to our school for 10% cheaper than the RRP and an extra bonus that 25% of the price goes back to the school for us to purchase more books.

Please click on the link below to purchase a book for our library. The books are sent directly to us. You can also find the link on the school website.

LoveReading exists because reading matters, and books change lives.

It’s well-documented that reading for pleasure, and improving reading standards, has a huge impact on children’s wellbeing, academic achievements, and future success.

But the sad truth is, cuts to school funding means many children don’t have access to well-stocked libraries. Many don’t get to experience the magic of reading that may well have made you a reader for life.

As a result, LoveReading has created a way to redress that shortfall; an easy way for you to share the magic of reading through supporting a school in your local community – simply buy books through our bookstore, a platform with social purpose.

Reading Matters

  • Over the last two decades, there has been a deepening recognition of the fundamental importance of improving reading standards on a child’s future academic achievement, wellbeing and success in life.
  • Reading and writing is the key to unlocking the rest of the curriculum.
  • Fluency of reading is also a key indicator for future success in further education, higher education and employment.
  • Even more significantly, being a highly engaged reader has the potential to allow a child to overcome their background.
  • Inspiring a love of books is one of the best ways to prepare children for a lifetime of learning, encouraging enjoyment of books and creating curious and engaged readers for life.

Mental Health Benefits

  • Research from the National Literacy Trust has shown us that children and young people who like to read are three times more likely to have better mental health than those who don’t.
  • Reading for just 10 minutes a day can have astonishing benefits.
  • Losing yourself in a good book has been shown to reduce your levels of stress.
  • Research by Dr David Lewis showed that reading as little as six minutes a day can reduce stress levels by 60% by reducing your heart rate, easing muscle tension and altering your state of mind
  • That same study showed that reading was better at reducing stress than music, drinking a cup of tea, going for a walk and playing video games.
